"If you build it, they will come." Well, maybe. There is a
misconception that putting up a bat house will automatically bring
you the good fortune of playing host to a mosquito eating colony of
bats. Bat houses will work if the conditions are right. It is important
to remember that bats are extremely choosy about their roost sites.
Most colonies have more than one roost site. A day roost, which is
used for resting during the daylight hours and a night roost. Night
roost are usually found close to the bats hunting grounds. This
roost will be used for foraging and resting in between meals during
the night hours. They may also have different roost sites at
different times of the year. A cooler, shadier place during summer
time and a warmer place during the winter. Another factor to
consider is the size of the colony. Most commercial bat houses can
accommodate about 100 to 200 bats. The average colony size of
some species of bats can be in the thousands. Probably the most
important thing to know about owning a bat house is, you must have
patience, patience, patience. Bats will only occupy a bat house if
they choose it as a good, safe site for their roost.

Most bat houses may take up to a year or more before they are colonized. Location and the
physical structure of the bat house also make some houses more successful than others.
- Bat houses placed under shady trees are less successful than houses
which are located in open areas and receive more direct sunlight
throughout a longer period of the day.
- Painted and well sealed houses also have a greater success rate than
unpainted and drafty houses.
- Houses should be painted black where high temperatures in July
average 85 F., medium or light colored such as earth tones where
temperatures average between 95 & 100 F., and white if it exceeds 100
F.
- Bats will find a house mounted on a pole or the side of a building more
than twice as fast as houses mounted on trees.
- All bat houses should be mounted at least 12ft. off the ground. Fifteen
to twenty five feet high is better.
- Make sure the house is not mounted to close to any kind of bright light.
They should also be mounted at least 15ft. away from any obstructions
such as tree limbs and branches.
- The best placement for a bat house would be close to forest areas or
near the waters edge. These are areas which bats tend to fly in while
forging.
- The best chance for success would be to place a bat house near an
area where the bats have been excluded.
